How our DPF service works
We perform an in-depth inspection and analysis of the DPF system. This comprises a visual inspection and a thorough analysis of your vehicle’s live data to make sure the sensors and diagnostic readings are reliable and accurate. We’ll also check for any DPF components that are worn or failed and replace them so that you don’t get any surprises down the line.
When we’re happy that your system is functioning properly, we’ll remove the DPF from your vehicle to clean it. The first stage of the cleaning process is soaking the DPF with a solution that breaks down the carbon deposits. These dissolved deposits are then flushed out and the DPF goes into our special cleaning machine.
Our special cleaning machine uses a pneumatic method, which means that it blows high-pressure air through the DPF to blow out any residue and cleaning solution that may have been left behind. To make doubly sure that the cleaning process has worked fully, we check the flow rate of your DPF before and after; once we’re sure your DPF is as clean as possible, we’ll reinstall it and re-set its performance data.
Our cleaning service is cheaper than replacing your DPF
Our service doesn’t just clean your DPF, it reconditions it. We can remove more than 98% of the soot and ash deposits that have built up over time, leaving your DPF like new, but at a fraction of the cost of replacement.
Keeping your DPF clean in the future
The best way to keep your DPF functioning well for longer is to look after it in the first place. Here’s some tips to help you to manage more miles between cleanings.
Avoid short drives
Obviously, sometimes you have to make shorter trips, but try to keep them to a minimum. The ash and soot deposits in your DPF burn off at around 600°C so you need to take regular long drives in order for your exhaust system to reach this temperature. If you’ve had a week of school runs and traffic jams, clear out the pipes by going for a longer spin.
Have a regular service
It’s important to maintain your vehicle according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Use the right oil for your DPF, which is a low sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur (SAPS) formulation, as this will only produce small amounts of soot and other particles. This means you’re less likely to end up with a clogged filter and go longer between cleanings. You might also be able to use an additive that lowers the burning point of the deposits, and this needs to be topped up regularly.
Use good quality fuel
Higher quality diesel produces less particulate matter upon burning, so look out for low-sulphur options and try to avoid refuelling at cheaper stations like the ones you see at supermarkets.
Never ignore your DPF warning light
That light is there for a reason – to tell you that the filter is becoming clogged. If it starts flashing, you should follow your vehicle’s handbook as it’ll give you instructions on what to do next. You may need to drive for long enough to burn off the deposits or you may need to come to us for a professional DPF clean.
Get your EGR valve checked out
An EGR valve that’s stuck in the open position or at another, incorrect, angle is a common cause of DPF blockages. The valve being partly or fully open means higher levels of particulates coming into the filter and your DPF will clog up faster than it should.
