MAS content pages DPF removal
MAS offers a DPS, or diesel particulate filter removal service to UK drovers. Our DPS removal services disable the function, alongside all of its sensors and the DPF regeneration. This means that we can remove the DPS from the exhaust with no complications.
What is the DPF and how does it work?
Your diesel particulate filter, sometimes known as the filtre a particules or FAP, is a trap set into the exhaust of your vehicle which collects diesel particles or soot from the combustion of the fuel.
As the diesel particles build up in the filter, they get burned off once a temperature of around 600°C is reached in the exhaust system. If this temperature – the burning point of soot – isn’t reached then the engine control unit (ECU) will put the system into regeneration mode. This mode alters the timing of fuel injection so that the exhaust reaches the crucial temperature of 600°C and burns away the collected soot particles.
The DPF in vehicles is designed to reduce the amount of particulate pollution from vehicle exhausts that enters the air. These filters can remove up to 85% of the particulate matter (PM) that comes from exhaust pipes, which is great, but there are inherent issues with DPFs as they can easily become blocked. These blockages can lead to frequent and expensive repairs and so one option is the professional removal of the DPF.
DPF removal in UK vehicles is for off-road vehicles only. If it’s obvious that your DPF has been removed then your vehicle will fail its MOT.
Why you might want a DPF removal service
The problems with DPFs usually arise when the filters become blocked or when the sensors fail. Sensor failures can lead the ECU to falsely detect that the exhaust is blocked or that it isn’t blocked when it actually is. Repairs to the DPF can be really expensive – as much as £2,000 or more – and so removing the facility can save lots of money and time.
At MAS we can remove the DPF function from the ECU software. Our experienced technicians can work on cars, trucks, plant machinery and tractors and many UK drivers find that this procedure offers their vehicle several advantages.
Less time spent on regeneration
Frequent regeneration processes can restrict the performance of the engine. At worst, they don’t work fully and leave behind a small percentage of the soot, which builds up over time. In addition to this, regeneration consumes extra fuel, which can add to your running costs.
An improved overall performance
At best, DPF removal can increase the performance of your vehicle. Our expert technicians can delete your DPF so that you notice smoother acceleration and lowered exhaust gas temperatures. Frequent “heat cycling” between high and low temperatures in your engine can lead to fractures over time.
Improved fuel economy
One of the most noticeable benefits of a DPF deletion is the improvement in your fuel economy. You’ll see the benefits straight away, as extra fuel isn’t being used on regenerations and you might be able to start using cheaper engine oils.
You don’t have to deal with DPF issues and repairs anymore
On average, a minor DPF repair or clean can cost between £100 and £200 and if you’re having regular issues, these repair bills can mount up. A DPF deletion can end this expensive cycle.
A DPF removal can be done very discreetly
The best DPF removals are carried out very discreetly so it’s impossible to tell from a visual inspection that they’ve been done.
You’ll save yourself lots of money in the long run
As well as the costs of the fuel used to regenerate the DPF and any intermittent clean-ups or repairs, you could be faced with a hugely expensive DPF replacement if yours becomes permanently blocked or damaged. Removal or deletion takes these problems out of the equation.
The reasons a DPF might fail and need to be repaired or replaced
There are several reasons for DPF failure and here are just some:
- The vehicle has a high mileage and the DPF has become compacted by very fine particles of soot
- The sensors have failed or aren’t working properly and are preventing DPF regeneration
- There’s no suitable additive in the fuel (if it’s required) and so there’s incomplete burn-off of soot
- There are engine problems like a leaking injector, worn piston rings, or worn or leaky valve stem oil seals
- The DPF can’t regenerate because the vehicle is used mainly for shorter, local journeys around a town or city
- Poorly-conducted performance tuning, and
- Driving in a gear that’s too low for motorways, which prevents the start of regeneration.
